Women initially cycled in skirts and dresses
Putting the top tube lower was done for the sake of modesty when women rode bikes in dresses. The lower top tube made the bike weaker and less stable, but back then women were not expected to ride hard. Today, there is no fundamental difference between a women’s specific design and a bike designed for men. Some manufacturers will change the lengths of the various tubes to match what they feel are differences in the proportions between male and female anatomy, such as the percentage of height in the torso as opposed to the legs. Other very respected manufacturers say there is no significant proportion difference and the problem is that bikes are not properly fitted to shorter people of either gender.
In any case, if you see a “girl’s bike” with the low top tube, then it is being made for marketing or nostalgia reasons. Don’t confuse this with a design that has a sloping top tube that meets the seat tube at or very near the top. That’s something completely different.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — BJs Wholesale Club Inc. said Wednesday its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose to $55 million, $1.01 a share, from $52.7 million, or 91 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Recent results included a one-time benefit of 6 cents a share related to a class-action lawsuit and the adjustment of legal reserves. Analysts polled by FactSet Research were looking for earnings of 95 cents a share, on average. Sales edged up to $2.8 billion from $2.6 billion. For fiscal 2011, the retailer projected earnings in the range of $2.54 to $2.64 a share, versus the Wall Street consensus of $2.71 a share. First-quarter earnings are predicted to be in the range of 40 cents to 45 cents a share, compared to analyst’s mean estimate of 44 cents a share. Shares of BJ closed Tuesday at $36.47.

Twist, trigger, and dual control.
There are no advantages. It's all preference. Twist shifters you actually twist the inboard portion of your grip to shift gears. Trigger shifters usually have two levers on each shifter, one to shift up, the other to shift down. Dual control shifters allow you to shift by flicking the brake lever either up or down to shift gears.
If you are asking about who makes them, mainly Shimano or SRAM. Each of them has an entire family of shifters from cheap to ultra high end (race quality). You pick the quality level that suits you. There are no distinct advantages to either brand, other than preference.
My personal preference is dual control shifters/ brake levers because I always have the ability to shift /brake without adjusting my grip on the bars at all.
