You can get a big box store bike for $100. If you want a real road bike with quality components, one of the best values right now is the Lemond Reno, according to Bicycling magazine that is. It runs around $900.
the starting price for a quailty road bike is going to start around $1000. but if you take care of it, i guarentee it will be a good investment and last you a long time.
you could go to dicks or sports authority and buy a $200 bike, but you might have to replace it in a couple of years.
I see Schwinn varsity bikes for around 120$ at walmart, seriously those are decent bikes… but they probably are a lot heavier and dont have as good derailleurs as a 500$ bike would. I paid 300$ for a GMC Denali road bike, highly recommend it, got it at dunhams. You would be best off with a Specialized, Cannondale, Haro, Giant, Fuji, or Raleigh. Those are the top bikes. You could go with a Bianchi or a Merckx, amazing bikes but very expensive. Good luck!
